Ghar Jamai Meaning

A person who decides to live with his father or mother-in-law and his wife He lives there as their son and does all the work required for his in-laws' family. The parents who have the only daughter as a child prefer to keep ghar jamai or son-in-law so that they may have a support of a male member in their old age and their owings may be in safe hands after them.

There is a tradition of ghar jamai staying with Parents in Law known in English as son-in-law & different languages have different words. In North East India where the girl gets her family properties ( Matriarchal Society ) they have son-in-law at home.

Single Child Parents

Nowadays, Son or daughter is a single child so this other tradition is followed where boy goes to his parents in law. That son-in-law at home or Ghar Jamai practise is good if it is convenient.

City Couples

Couples in the city are staying away from both sets of parents to avoid confrontation while remaining close by. Ex: A couple has a house between both sets of parents within a radius of 5 km or 20 km. This is being followed in some Cities in South India.

All East location from India to Japan including China has same traditions. We as parents devote our all to our children, who, when we are old, take care of us. Old people they help the grand children in various ways: as parents of the child are in Office, the grand parents feed or bathe or look after the grand child. It saves money for all and contributes to healthy relationships based on love.

Matriarchal Country

India is a matriarchal country where men have more control over women. After marriage, a bride leaves her parent's home to live at her husband's home along-with her in-laws. Her husband's home becomes her own home. It is the duty of the husband to provide for and maintain the family. Woman can work and earn in modern days but it is not compulsory. Most marriages are arranged, and the first condition of marriage is the earning capacity of the groom.

It is considered a shame on the part of the husband if he stays with his wife's family. It means he has no independence, and he is not earning enough to maintain his family. So it is considered taboo for an Indian man to live with his wife's parents, but there can be exceptions. Nowadays, couples even live without parents on both sides. Many parents also want to live, like in Western countries.
