Explained traditional rituals in a Telugu Matrimony ceremony

It is great to marry a Telugu bride because they have a rich culture, and the son-in-law is highly respected and pampered in a Telugu matrimony. The food is very rich, spicy, and tasty; there are many festivals, and the family system is pretty good. Telugu brides balance their personal and professional lives better compared with other women.

Pellichupulu in a Telugu Matrimony

In the Telugu matrimony ceremony, the bride's family invites the groom's family to their guest house. After this, every person on the bride's side is introduced to every person on the groom's side, and vice versa. This is followed by offering sweetened water to all the groom-side people and some other rituals. This takes around three to four hours. This is not a religious ceremony but a custom to know each other's families that has carried on for decades.

Mata Muchata in a Telugu Matrimony

If both sides agree to the marriage, then they (the families) again meet at the girl's house, where the boy's family will tell her that she is our girl, and the same with the girl's family. It is like the Roka ceremony in North India.

Snatakam in a Telugu Matrimony

In this Telugu ceremony, the groom's side performs a ritual called Snatakam. While this snatakam is being carried out by the groom's family, a Gouri (Indian Goddess) puja is being performed by the bride in another room. Both are carried out simultaneously. So this is a religious ritual.

Engagement in a Telugu Matrimony

Here, the bride and groom exchange rings, and the bride and groom's family exchange gifts, gold, and accessories. Then some people fix their marriage date, and some people will do it after their engagement.

I'm not sure what rituals they'll perform between engagement and Mangalasnanalu, but I'm sure they'll go shopping.

Mangalasnanalu in a Telugu Matrimony

This will affect both the bride's and the groom's families. They will apply turmeric paste and oil and wash it off with water.

From the bride's family, five men will take turmeric, the groom's dress, and some other things to the groom's place, and they will also bring some things from the groom's side.

After that, in the bride's home, there will be a ceremony called pelikuthurini cheyadam in which there will be one child beside the bride, called thoti pelli kuturu. She is like company for the bride. She will stay with the bride until she goes to the mandapam. They will give the bride a saree and make her, as well as keep pelli bottu, during this ceremony. After this, the bride can't go out of the house. The same takes place at the groom's house, too.

Gouri Pooja in a Telugu Matrimony

Before starting the wedding rituals, the bride has to perform gouri pooja, which means worshipping the goddess Parvati.

Edurukolu in a Telugu Matrimony

This means welcoming the groom and his family. The bride's side brothers and maternal uncle will welcome the groom, and they will lift him on their shoulders and carry him to the mandapam.

Jeelakarra Bellam in a Telugu Matrimony

Then comes Jeelakarra Bellam at an auspicious time. Here, the bride and groom place a mixture of cumin and jaggery on each other's heads.

This is followed by Mangala Sutra Dharana (tying the knot).

Talambralu in a Telugu Matrimony

After Mangala Sutra Dharana, various rituals are followed, which are not religious but fun events. They are Thalambralu (pouring rice over each other's heads), fetching rings from a vessel containing water, and some more fun events. All these things take 2-3 hours.

List of things to shop for a South Indian Telugu bride:

Jewelry like Vanki, Vaddanam, Haram, Maang tikka, Champa swaralu, Nosepins, Jhumkas, and Bangles Nethichutti and Rakodi in the head; elaborate and ornate decorations on the head; earrings with supporting chains; different types of necklaces (the designs of which again depend upon your region or caste); armlets; bangles; rings; a golden belt around the waist. Usually, Hindu brides don't wear gold below the waistline, as gold is considered the embodiment of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and wearing gold below the waistline is seen as disrespectful by most people.
Sarees for the wedding. One main saree and one white saree with a red blouse for Talambralu. Others for remaining events like reception etc.
Matching glass bangles for sarees.
Flowers are used in decorating the elaborate hairdo of the bride. On top of these, she would also need two to three garlands. A big one, which she is wearing throughout. one or two smaller ones, which she will be exchanging with the groom after tying the knot.
Metti or toe rings. Usually made of silver. The number and design depend upon the caste, community, or region. It's worn by the bride after tying the knot. The bride retains the mangalyam (obviously) and metti, which are signs of her marital status.
Brooches and saree pins.
A lot of safety pins and hairpins.
Vaddanam, if not a gold one, is a duplicate one, but it's a must.
New sets of nightwear for after going to in-law's house.
New footwear.
New big suitcase, a trolley one preferable.
A new makeup kit depending on preferences with minimum foundation, lipstick, perfume, and eye shadows.
